“22 DE Nec LFG or LFM KC, Heal pref” umm… yeah right. Ever find yourself wondering exactly what people were saying even though they had apparently spoken in plain English… or the Telon Dialect of it at least. We have decided to compile up a list of these terms that are commonly used in our day to day necromancer lives. Excedrin started a post which Xerokill expanded on heavily and did a fine job explaining the terms identified so far. We are hoping to see more of his tidbits of terminological wisdom (was that even a word?!?!) Enough chatter.. .on with the Terms and meanings! AFAIK - As Far As I Know. AFK - away from keyboard AOE - Area of Effect: Any spell that targets and hits several MOBs in a specified area.
AP - actually stands for Attribute Points, at least I think it does. I don't know if any class gets "Action Points" but it would stand to reason that AP is for Attribute Points. These are the points we get at every level starting at level 10. ATM - At the Moment. THIS IS NOT - Automatic Transaction Machine, where you get money back! That would be 7-11! BFN - Bye For Now Farewell. Adios. See ya. etc. BIO - Often used with BRB, short for biological or... I'm going to take a pee-pee! Although technically it is more of a LEAVE a pee-pee.. never did understand that one. Bot - a player character controlled by a 3rd party program, against the rules in most MMORPGs. Sonmeone who plays multiple characters in this fashin is also known as a Hydra. Boxing - One player playing more than one account at the same time. Often the number of accounts used is mentioned, e.g., two-boxing, three-boxing BRB - Be right back Buff - An effect that improves a character's stats temporarily. These stats could be increased health, strength, defense, speed, or other effects. Also used for the act of casting said buffs on a player or group. Buff bot - A character controlled by a macros from a second computer (aka BOT) that is used to buff other players Camp - A location or spawn point that players usually stay at killing the spawns, usually in an area where they can safely pull from the "camp" without adds, can also be used as a verb to describe the act of camping. Care Bear - Refers to players or a server that does not allow player vs player combat; usually derogatory.
CC - Crowd Control - This can take on many forms, but its simplest definition is any ability that is specifically designed to eliminate one or more enemies from combat. A spell such as Mesmerize which will cause the enemy to become a vegetable is a prime example. In the examples of tanks above it outlines how important it is for every one to focus their fire on one MOB so that these effects do not get nullified. One hit, and the MOB will awaken, usually very angry at the squishy caster that put him to sleep.
There are both "Hard" and "Soft" forms of CC. The difference is that a Hard CC is one that will render the enemy completely helpless, unable to attack, move, or do anything until the spell wears off or they are hit. Soft CC on the other hand is something like a Root that takes the creature out of combat but only if it is not in range of anything to hit or cast spells on. If you root a melee mob right in the middle of the fight, he will still have free access for hitting people. The same applies to rooting casters within their spell range, it just doesn't do anything as they will just stand there and cast. Rooting a spell caster can actually be more dangerous than fighting them up close. Most spell casters try to get into melee range, and will melee with you while casting spells here and there. Their spell damage is almost always about 10x worse than their melee damage. If they are rooted, then they have no other choice but to cast, repeatedly, which can greatly increase their DPS. CD - Cooldown. The time between when a skill is used and when it may be used again. Crack - Originated in Everquest with enchanters. Crack is any form of mana regeneration buff. Crit - Critical strike/hit. A hit that multiplies the damage of a typical strike. DC - Disconnect, when a player is disconnected from the game. DD - Direct Damage, a type of spell or ability that directly damages another character Debuff - An effect that decreases a target's stats temporarily. Also the act of debuffing is referrred to as debuff (debuff that mob quick!) Ding - Gaining a level. A reference from EverQuest where, upon gaining a level, the game would make a loud "ding" sound. Ahh... memories. DKP - Dragon Kill Points, a point system used to distribute in-game items among groups of players. DPS - A standard way to calculate the rate of damage dealt to others. (100 damage over 10 seconds is 10 DPS.) Drop Rate - Term that refers to the rate at which an item willl drop from a monster. DS - The proverbial "Damage Shield". A magical effect / buff on a character that deals damage to anyone attacking that character. Drood/Drewd - A slang term for players of the druid character class, Emote - An action that allows the players to act out feelings, moods, End-game - Refers to the parts of an MMO designed for the max level players. Epic - Extreme rare piece of equipment or extremely difficult encounter or quest Exploit - A Bug / flaw in the game that allows a player to have some form of advantage over other players, access otherwise hidden or unavailable content /areas, bypass parts of the game, or abuse NPC AI. Faction - A measurement of how liked or disliked your character is by certain groups of NPC's within the game. FAOE - Frontal Area of Effect: Any Area of Effect spell or ability that has an area of 180 degrees or less in front of the caster.
(It is important to note that some people do not distinguish between FAOE, AOE and PBAOE. In a situation where it might be important to know, you should always ask for confirmation. For example, if you are fighting a nasty boss that has an AOE that you need to flee from, knowing if it is a regular AOE or a PBAOE or a FAOE will make a huge difference. If it is a FAOE then you can just stand behind him and never take a hit from it. If it is a PBAOE you need to get X meters away from the main tank. If it is a regular AOE you need to get X meters away from the boss himself.) Farm - To repeatedly kill certain creatures in order to get a rarely-dropped piece of loot, lots of a common drops, or just plain money / coin. FD - Feign Death - The ability of a class to "play dead" thus tricking the creatures you are fighting or pulling into going home, happy and content in the destruction of their enemy... even if they can't figure out how they killed you from 50 meters... maybe he had a heart attack. In Vanguard the necromancer version of this is called Rest the Dead. Fetch Quests - (Also known as "FedEx Quest") A quest that requires a player to act as a courier, FFA Free-For-All; usually refers to the party loot system where anyone is free to loot any corpse they find, in a "first come, first served" basis. Fodder Groups of easy-to-kill mobs that pose little to no threat. Also knowsn as "Yard Trash". Gank - when a player of significantly higher level kills a weaker player. Gimped - Describing a player character, class, race, skill, ability, or other aspect of the game that is perceived to be underpowered. GL - Guild Leader. GM - Game Master, a person employed by the developer of the game as a customer service / Tech Support Rep. Grind - To repetitively kill mobs in an area, usually for experience. Group - A Party of players. Also the act of forming a group. Guild - An organized team of players that have banded together for a common cause. Guildie - A member of your guild. HoT - Heal over time. Hydra - A player playing more than one account at the same time. Also known as a botter. IMBA - Imbalanced, in need of a nerf badly. IMO - In my Opinion. Of which we all have many. IMHO - In my Honest Opinion. Of which are up debateable. Incoming or inc - A message denoting NPCs' or other players' arrival for the party to fight. Instance - An instance dungeon is a part of the game world that is a private copy which was made and reserved for a player or group of players. I Win Button - A derogatory used to describe a character class or character ability that's considered overpowered. Kiting - The original definition of kiting stems from the tactic of putting a snare on a mob, and then running away from it while staying out of range. The name is obvious because it rather resembles flying a kite. The tactics involved in kiting have certainly evolved over the years, but the main principle in kiting is simply snaring the mob and running from it. This was actually first used more as a crowd control measure than a killing method. Of course it didn't take people long to realize that if I add some DOTs to the mob while it is snared and just run in a circle, it will kill itself. It may not be the fastest method for killing, but it certainly allows a solo player to take on things that would otherwise destroy them with all due haste and deliberation.
To further expound upon the definition of the term "kiting" consider the following:
If you add in a fear, you are now "reverse kiting" or "fear kiting". Now, toss in a couple extra mobs and you are "dual-kiting" or "quad-kiting". If you add both "fear kiting" and "dual-kiting" you are now "juggling". Put a few friends together and have them follow the mob while you kite, this is "group kiting" or "tank kiting". I am sure there are more examples to be made, but these are the most obvious. KK - Short for "Okay cool" ("k kool") KOS - Short for "Kill on Sight". KS - Short for "Kill stealing", when a player engages and kills a NPC that was being fought by another player, possibly receiving loot rights and experience. Lag - When the game client freezes up or moves slowly. Leech - Joining a party and not participating in any fighting, but still gaining xp. Leeroy Jenkins - (also simply Leeroy or pulling a Leeroy) A term used to describe a player just before he/she intentionally aggros a large number of mobs for their group to 'play' with, or otherwise intentionally disrupting a task. Usually resulting in death for the whole group. Leet - The opposite of a newb, shortened slang for Elite. Also represented as 1337 LFG - Looking for Group - This is used in shouts and OOC when someone is trying to get a group to hunt or quest with. Sometimes it is followed up with LFG TOD where TOD would equal a specific location that you are wanting to group for. LFM - Looking for More - This is used in shouts and OOC when a group is trying to find additional group members to hunt or quest with. Sometimes it is followed up with LFM healer / DPS where healer / DPS would equal a specific class that the party is in need of. LOM/OOM - Low On Mana/Out of Mana Loot Whore - Someone who is deemed 'excessively preoccupied with the accumulation of items and/or money in a game'. LoS - Line Of Sight. MA - Main Assist - This is the person that every one in the group or raid is going to assist in order to concentrate fire power and to prevent the disruption of crowd control abilities. If a MOB is mezzed then it can't be hit, or it negates the effect. The MA is usually the MT as well, but in a large raid it is not uncommon for a separate tank or person to be the Main Assist so the tank can focus on keeping all the attention on him/her. MACRO - A preset arrangement of commands set to a hot key or combination used to make the process of doing said commands easier Main - The main character played by a given player Mana - The pool of magic points / energy used by a player when casting spells or using other magic abilities. Meat Shield - A slang term for a Tank or heavily armoreed warrior. Mezz - See CC (Crowd Control). Mitigation - Damage Mitigation, referring to the amount of damage which is absorbed by a characters armour and is not deducted from their health ML - Main Looter / Master Looter. Refers to the primary person Looting corpses during group outings/crawls. Very often a front line tank. Being a Mage, I try and stay as far away from the front as possible. Always remember my motto: PROTECT THE MAGE!
MOB - Is an old throwback from EQ and actually stood for "Mobile Object" it was later refined down to be any "Mobile Object" that is not an NPC (non-player character) like merchants and quest givers. An example:
An Orc Thrasher, a creature that gives EXP and may be a target for a quest, is a "MOB" While Boomba the Big, although he is a creature, and is killable, he granted no EXP for the kill, and was a simple merchant. He is known as an NPC.
If you want I can toss in a few more and we can make a full on list. MOD - A moderater, or someone who manages control over the game and handles with rule-breakers. More commonly seen used on forums. MPK - Mass Player Kill. To intentionally kill a large number of player controlled characters, usually by training several mobs and running to the players' position. MT - Main Tank - T he Defensive Fighter that is taking all the agro thus taking all the damage. The healers will be concentrating most of their heals on this person. Mule - A character created for the sole purpose of holding items for a "real" character Named - An NPC that usually has a generic model but a unique name. TYpically carries better loto drops than a typical member of it's monster category and level. NBG - Need Before Greed. Typically refers to being in a group and looting. If someone "Needs" an item more than others they will be given the item rather than the looter being "Greedy" and hording it for sale. It's a share and get along kinda thing. Nerf - The act of intentionally weakening a skill, ability, feature, or class in the interest of game balance, Ninja or Ninja Looter - This is a person that is widely hated and despised by most people. They have no self control or respect for their teammates. Their only concern is what they can get for themselves. They are the first to loot every single body, usually wiping it clean before it even finishes its death animation. They will also loot in the middle of large fights while they should be fighting, or healing, or tanking. These people will gain a bad reputation and very quickly at that. All it takes is a little word of mouth and they will find it increasingly more difficult to find groups. For example: Group of 5 people need one more person for a DPS slot. Ninja_Looter_001 replies to the query and the group leader asks if any one knows of him. The healer in the group recalls of a time when they had grouped and inform the group that he loves to loot everything he can get his hands on, and is subsequently not allowed to group, or is brought in on a trial basis.
A second definition of what a Ninja Looter is some one that loots something that should have been rolled on, and just leaves. This is the worst kind of Ninja Looter, as it usually involves a very rare and valuable piece of equipment. If they are the group leader they may change the loot settings right before the fight in order to make it possible, hoping no one noticed. If some one does call them out they may claim that the setting it was on is buggy, or they don't want their to be any confusion. In any event, it usually ends in that person getting a nice piece of loot that they didn't win, or wasn't rolled on, and then leaving. Sure they may get a few gold or platinum for that sword they just swiped, but they definitely wont make any friends that way, and will get themselves black listed in no time. Noob / N00b - Shortened and "l33t" forms of the common internet term "newbie," which was first shortened as "newb," simply referring to someone inexperienced at a game and displaying their lack of knowledge. NPC - Non-player character, a character that is controlled by the game. Nuke - Another term for direct damage spells, often used as a verb to indicate the act of repeatedly casting such a spell on a specific target OMG - Oh My God! Exclamation fo disbelief. OOM - Out Of Mana/Magic. OOR - Out of Range. OT - Off Tank - This is a secondary tank and their job is to occupy any "adds" that are not mezzable. You don't want these hitting the healers and you it may be too much for one tank to handle either in terms of aggro control or damage taken. Pally - Short for the Paladin character class Party - A group of players fighting together. Patch - a new set of files that must sometimes be downloaded and installed by each player. These files usually contain updates and bug fixes to the game, and sometimes contain new features, new quests, new content, or any other addition, deletion, or alteration of the game that the designers have decided to "push out." Patch Notes - A text-file that accompanies a patch. PBAOE - Point Blank Area of Effect: As described above this describes an Area of Effect spell that is casted on the target and affects an area around the target. That is to say, a PBAOE would be cast on the enemy and affect a radius around him. A regular AOE would just radiate out from yourself. PC - Player Character. Pet - An NPC that belongs to a player character, for instance summoned minions that can be commanded by the player to attack targets. Phat lewt - A slang term used to describe items of great value. PK - Player killer, a player who kills another in PvP Pop - A monster respawning in the player's or group's immediate vicinity. Power Leveling / PL - A method of levelling a character faster (ie accumulating experience points quicker) than would be possible by playing the game normally. PST - Please Send Tell, when a player wants others to contact them regarding something. PUG - Pick-up Group: This is a team of completely random people. A lot of people hate to join them because... well they suck. Random people that have never grouped with each other don't know what every one else is capable of and how they play. A lot of people contribute it to stupidity but I find it is more a lack of communications (Team Speak / Ventrilo), not knowing each persons play style, and not knowing what they are capable of. Yes there are plenty of situations where it can be contributed to sheer stupidity, but not all cases. Pull - A term to describe attacking a mob so that it comes to a designated area to be engaged. PvE - Player vs Environment. PvP - Player versus Player. PSW - Short for "please send whisper"; same as PST QFT - Quoted for Truth (probably won't see the in game but on the forums you might) Quest - Built-in goals or objectives that are issued to the player by NPCs R - Ready. To indicate a player is ready., or a short way of asking others if they are ready Raid - Multiple groups combining their efforts to solve difficult quests or venture into difficult instances, this is called a raid. Regen - The process of recovering lost hit points, mana, stamina, etc. OFten viewed as a regen rate. Reroll - The act of creating a new character. Rez - Abbreviated form of resurrect, the act of bringing a dead player back to life RL - Raid Leader. Person leading a group raid. Typically in dungeon crawls and group outings. The RL may or not be the ML, or a front line Tank. RNG - Short for Random Number Generator.. bet you thought it meant Ranger huh. Rollback - To repair a critical problem with a gaming world, the game may be rolled back to a previous state / last saved point. RP - Role-playing. Shammy - Slang term for Shaman. SMAT - Acronym for "Send Me A Tell". Spawn - The moment when a particular mob appears or reappears in game. Spawn Camp - The act of waiting near or at a location where a mob or player will appear in game with the intention of killing them immediately Squishy - A character who wears cloth armor and / or has very low health. ST - Secondary Tank. Tank - A player who intentionally aims to keep all of the mob's aggro, by doing so, protecting other party members who can heal the tank or damage the mob more effectively. Test - A reference to the test server. TNL - "To next level", how many experience points are needed for a player to reach the next level. Toon - Slang term for a player's character. Trash - Trash mobs; a large number of easier mobs. Train - A line of charging mobs. Often brought to a zone-line. Treadmill - Term describing the repetitive grinding many games require to reach the highest levels. Trolling - When someone clearly and deliberately writes or posts a message in a manner for the purpose of angering and/or insulting an individual or group. TT - Tertiary Tank. Twink - A low level character that has been equipped with high-level or unusually strong gear. Twist - A method of cycling several powers, spells, or abilities with limited durations at once. This was the bread and butter of the Everquest Bard. Uber - A player or object that is considered superior. Vendor - An NPC merchant that buys and sells item. Can also be used to describe the act of selling an item to an NPC vendor instead of to another player. Vendor trash - Items that serve no purpose other than being sold to an NPC for money. Vent - Ventrilo, a popular program that allows players to speak with each other audibly rather than via typing. Warp - A player or NPC suddenly disappearing from one place and reappearing in another. Wipe - When a party or group of player characters are all killed by enemies. WTB - "Want to buy", when a player wants to buy a specific item from another player. WTC - "Want to craft", when a player wants to craft a specific item (looking for crafter). WTF - WHAT THE F%$K. An exclamation of disbelief. WTS - "Want to sell", when a player wants to sell a specific item to another player. WT - "Wrong Tel"l. Used when a player sends a message in the wrong channel WTT - "Want to trade", when a player wants to trade a specific item for another one. XP - Experience or experience points. (Also known as EXP). Zerg - Originated from Starcraft where the zerg race could produce a large amount of weak units to overwhelm opponents. It basically means you mindlessly charge in and use strength of numbers rather than tactics to defeat yo opponent. ZI - Short for "Zone-In", the place where one enters a zone Zone - Any subdivision of the virtual world; usually accompanied by loading of new content or some other transition.

===============================================
A true story: When I first started playing UO a friend of mine was killed repeatedly by random players for no apparent reason. He had named his character with his initials: PK
